BEIJING-How much is a hundredth of a second worth?

How about a $1-million.

Michael Phelps controversial victory against Serbia and Orange County’s Milorad Cavic in the 2008 Olympic Games 100-meter butterfly final gave Phelps his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Games. By matching Mark Spitz’s performance at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Phelps triggered a $1-million bonus in his contract with Speedo.

With seven medals, Orange County athletes would have been tied with the Dutch for 13th among the nations of the world at midday Saturday.

All our medals - two gold, three silver and two bronze - have come in swimming.

Aaron Peirsol (100 backstroke) and Jason Lezak (4×100 freestyle relay) have the golds.

Peirsol (200 backstroke), Milorad Cavic (100 butterfly) and Dara Torres (4×100 freestyle relay) have the silver.

Lezak (100 freestyle) and Larsen Jensen (400 freestyle) have the bronze.

Six of the medals have been won for the U.S. Cavic, from Tustin, won his swimming for Serbia.

Phelps wins No. 7

PhelpsBEIJING-Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the 2008 Olympic Games, edging Milorad Cavic of Serbia and Tustin by a hundreth of a second in Saturday’s 100-meter butterfly final.
